Women's Wellness by Appointment
Lewis County Health Department offers Well Women services once a month by appointment only. A sliding fee scale applies.

Services Offered
Pregnancy and Counseling
Services include pregnancy testing and counseling related to pre-conceptual issues, birth control measures including abstinence, and pregnancy.
Birth Control Options
Two common methods prescribed for clients are the pill and Depo Provera shots. Condoms are also available as an alternative to contraceptive drugs.
Exams and Referrals
Clients requesting birth control drugs receive a physical examination including pelvic exam and Pap smear as indicated. A Certified Nurse Practitioner and Registered Nurses provide services.
Show Me Healthy Women
Free Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings
Show Me Healthy Women (SMHW) offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for Missouri women who meet age, income, and insurance guidelines.
SMHW began in 1992 and is Missouri's implementation of the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. It is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and several national, regional, and local partner organizations.
Provider locations are available throughout Missouri, including local public health agencies, federally qualified health centers, hospitals, private physician offices, and not-for-profit health centers.
Screening Services
- Clinical breast exams (CBE)
- Screening mammograms for women age 50-64
- Screening mammograms for women 40-49 using donated funds, if available
- Pap tests
- Pelvic exams
Diagnostic Services
- Specialist consultation for breast and cervical concerns
- Diagnostic mammograms
- Ultrasound
- Fine needle aspiration
- Cold knife conization for diagnostic purposes
- Breast biopsies
- Loop electrode biopsy (LEEP)
- Colposcopy with or without biopsy
Age Guidelines
Women age 21-64: Eligible for cervical cancer screening services, clinical breast exam, and diagnostic follow-up for abnormal results.
Women age 40-64: Eligible for breast and cervical cancer screening services, clinical breast exam, and diagnostic follow-up for abnormal results.
Women over age 64: Those without Medicare Part B may also receive services through the program.
Women with MO HealthNet, Medicare Part B, or HMO health coverage are not eligible for SMHW.
Cervical Cancer Screenings After Hysterectomy
- Due to cervical cancer or dysplasia: eligible for CBE, pelvic examination, and Pap test.
- Due to any reason other than cervical cancer or dysplasia: eligible for one Pap test and pelvic examination to determine the absence or presence of the cervix.
- Due to conditions other than cervical cancer or dysplasia and the cervix is absent: eligible for a CBE.

Clients must have a household income at or below 250 percent of the federal poverty income guidelines. Adjusted gross income on a tax return or net amount on a pay stub determines income eligibility.
STD Testing
Confidential Screening and Treatment
Confidential screening for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis is offered at the health department. Treatment and education programs are available. HIV screening with pre- and post-test counseling is also available.
Call for an appointment. This program is completely confidential and free of charge.
